Two long weekends in a row…
Last weekend was a bit of a long weekend. Jobs down in Atlanta, and then we left at 6am to be part of the Louisville Merle Haggard Tribute. That was a really fun gig, despite how I came scrambling in last minute. I got to play with a couple of really quality pickers (including Steve Cooley and Michael Cleveland) and I saw a lot of friends that I haven’t seen in a while. I was dead tired getting back, but it beat the weekend before, where we had a 2-night at a casino AND A GUY DIED WHILE WE WERE PLAYING! Yeah, I was out with Lunar Beach House, and…
New Album Out!
I’m really happy to announce my new album, now available on google play! I’ve had this idea for a while, to track some of the solo piano arrangements that I use in my day to day jobs. I sometimes get calls for weddings, private parties, restaurants or other venues where they say “just make it nice!” When I get those calls, I love it because it lets me just sit down and play. It’s one of the rare times that I can just imagine and things happen – that’s a pretty wonderful feeling. I’ve recorded some of my favorite inspirations to improvise around, some traditional Irish/Appalachian tunes, a Stephen Foster…
Jazz w/Brandon Coleman & Bill May
Had a great session with the Billy May Band last night – can’t believe how good these guys are sometimes…
Pigtronix Infinity Looper, second impressions…
So I’ve had the Pigtronix Infinity Looper for about a month now, and had numerous chances to air it out and see what it can do – and I’m both overwhelmed and underwhelmed. Let me explain: I know that there is a huge world of looping out there, of creative sounds, of clever uses, and of really intricate ways to pull off textures and patterns. This looper certainly appears capable of that, and what I’ve gotten it to do sounds really, really good. That being said, I’m almost entirely using it to lay down bass lines and then jam out over top of those, while it stays in sync with the…
This weekend will be busy, but it doesn’t compare to last weekend!
Last weekend was a fun run – four jobs in two days! I started with a killer show with DonnyBrook at Parlay Social, a pretty decent club in Lexington. We’ve played there several times before, and each time was a lot of fun. This time though, was looking a little dead, and when we went on at 9:30 I was worried it was going to be a slow night. That all changed at 9:45 when four batchelorette parties walked in. I haven’t had so much fun in a while – and the crowd was really, really into it. Congratulations to Star, Brittany, Jessica, and Emily – you guys (and your crews)…
Pigtronix Infinity Looper
One of the nicer things about being a professional musician is that I can buy new and interesting gear, then write it off on my taxes. I just came into possession of a Pigtronix Infinity Looper, and let me tell you – this thing is killer! I bought it because it was specifically listed as working with Singular Sound’s BeatBuddy, the best drum machine for live gigging, and a workhorse on my pedal board. I have barely scratched the surface of this device, and I’ll post something more later when I have a chance to really get into it, but I wanted to just start by saying that the dudes…
Blog Post 1
I’m not entirely sure what is going to end up here, though I have some ideas about things that I think are interesting enough to be worth documenting. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve gotten into a couple of projects, so I’ll probably include those, like dealing with a dead/dying stage piano, selling gear online, and trying out some new gear. I’ll also likely have some thoughts on being a working musician, and I’d like to get some lessons in here as well. I’m not very good at taking videos, but I will try to take a lot of pictures to make up for it. Hopefully I’ll get some…
